چکیده

Direct body waves and fundamental surface waves are calculated for a credible, hypothetical great earthquake on the San Andreas Fault. The prototype event assumed is the Fort Tejon earthquake of January 9, 1857. Amplitudes and durations of long-period ground motion ( T > 1 sec) are found for a receiver in downtown Los Angeles. Calculations are carried out for various epicenters, dislocation profiles, and time functions. Ground motion from Love radiation is found to be most important, with peak-to-peak amplitudes up to 14 em and durations up to 5 min. This duration is a factor of 3 longer than has been assumed by previous design earthquakes whose estimates have been based upon acceleration criteria. Although the present result reveals several important features of long-period ground motion resulting from a great earthquake, more details of rupture propagation need to be known before a more definitive prediction can be made. The present result should be considered tentative.

Assessment of Near-Fault Ground Motion Effects on the Fragility Curves of Tall Steel Moment Resisting Frames

Nowadays it is common to use the fragility curves in probabilistic methods to determine the collapse probability resulting from an earthquake. The uncertainties exist in intensity and frequency content of the earthquake records are considered as the most effective parameters in developing the fragility curves. The pulse-type records reported in the near-fault regions might lead to the major dam...

Wavelet-based Analysis for Pulse Period of Earthquake Ground-motions

Pulse period of earthquake records has been known as a key parameter in seismology and earthquake engineering. This paper presents a detailed characterization of this parameter for a special class of earthquake records called pulse-like ground motions. This type of motions often resulting from directivity effects is characterized by a strong pulse in the velocity time history of motion, in norm...

Influence of Ground Motion Duration on the Structural Response at Multiple Seismic Intensity Levels

This paper aims to investigate the effects of motion duration on the structural seismic demands, seeking potential correlations between motion durations and structural responses at several seismic intensity levels. Three seismic intensity levels with 100years, 475years, and 2475years earthquake return periods (RPs) are first considered for correlation computations. Spectrally matched ground mot...

Multicomponent C3 Green’s Functions for Improved Long-Period Ground-Motion Prediction

The virtual earthquake approach to ground-motion prediction uses Green’s functions (GFs) determined from the ambient seismic field to predict long-period shaking from scenario earthquakes. The method requires accurate relative GF amplitudes between stations and among components; however, the amplitudes of ambient-field GFs are known to be subject to biases from uneven source distribution. We sh...

Stress Patterns in Single Deck Floating Roofs Subjected to Ground Motion Accelerations

This paper investigates the induced stresses in circular single deck roofs floating on seismically excited storage tanks. Equations of motion are derived using variational principle. Response of deck floating roofs is evaluated for two different classes of ground motions; near-source and long-period far-field records. Besides time histories and frequency contents for a specific tank, peak value...
